All parties warned not to develop issue of 7 detained Thais into international problem

BANGKOK, Jan 5 (TNA) - The Royal Thai Survey Department has suggested that seven Thais had entered a disputed area near the Thai-Cambodian border unintentionally, while the deputy secretary-general of the National Security Council commented that such an issue was normal along the border and should not be developed into an international issue.

The Lower House Committee on Foreign Affairs on Wednesday (Jan 5) discussed the arrest of 7 Thais including Democrat Party MP for Bangkok Panich Vikitsreth by Cambodian soldiers allegedly for illegal immigration and the possibilities of helping the people. The committee invited representatives of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Defence Ministry and Sa Kaeo province for inquisition.

Chat Kittinoppadol, deputy governor of Sa Kaeo province, told the House Committee the 7 Thais had been arrested in a disputed area which had yet to undergo demarcation. Besides, Veera Somkhwamkid, who is among the seven, was arrested for the second time after his previous attempt to enter a disputed area and his arrest on August 20 last year.

Major General Noppadol Chotisiri, deputy director-general of the Royal Thai Survey Department, said his staff had surveyed the point of the latest arrest on December 31 and found the delegation of Mr Panich had been arrested in a disputed area which was undergoing demarcation. He said the Thai people might have accidentally accessed the area.

Anusit Khunakorn, deputy secretary-general of the National Security Council, said trespassing often happened in Thailand and neighboring countries and the group of the Thai people did not have any intention to trespass. He said such an issue was normal along the border where there was not a clear demarcation post. He warned all parties not to develop the matter into an international issue or a violent incident.

Meanwhile, in Sa Kaeo province, members of the Thai Patriots Network moved their rally from the Muang municipality in Aranyaprathet district toward Sri Pen road as they wanted to find out if the area where 7 Thais were arrested is in the Thai territory.

However, the demonstrators were blocked by soldiers in front the 126th Border Patrol Police Company. Soldiers told leaders of the rally to talk with the governor of Sa Kaeo and the commander of the Burapha Task Force.

At that time villagers of Khok Sung district rallied on Sri Pen road and blocked the demonstrators by parking six-wheeled trucks on the road. Both groups of people did not confront each other and there was not a violent incident.

Sa Kaeo governor Sanit Naksuksri said he would not let the demonstrators look for a demarcation post by Sri Pen road to prevent problems and protect bilateral relations, attempts to help the seven Thai people and the well-being of people living near the border. (TNA)
