Dutch Muslims vow to protect Christian Copts against al-Qaeda threat

Berlin, Jan 5, IRNA -- Three of the largest Dutch Muslim organizations have pledged to protect Christian Copts against threats leveled by the al-Qaeda terror network, press reports said here Tuesday.

Reacting to the offer, the Dutch Coptic community expressed its appreciation, saying it was seriously contemplating about the idea.
Dutch Muslim leaders have condemned al-Qaeda threats against Christian Copts.

There are around 6,000 Christian Copts living in the Netherlands.
Security for Copts has been stepped up in several countries, including Germany, the Netherlands and Austria, in the wake of the New Year eve attack in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, which killed 22 Copts and injured nearly 100.

Dutch authorities announced earlier in the day that they would also be boosting security at Coptic churches in Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Utrecht./end
