Iran extends all-out support for Iraq: Salehi

Baghdad, Jan 5, IRNA – Caretaker of Iran's Foreign Ministry Ali-Akbar Salehi said Wednesday that Iran would extend its all-out support for the people and government of Iraq.

Salehi made the remarks upon arrival at Baghdad International Airport where he was officially welcomed by Foreign Minister of Iraq Hoshyar Zebari.

The Iranian official told IRNA that he was in Baghdad on a day-long visit to felicitate the Iraqi nation and government on formation of the country's new government and for promotion of bilateral relations.

'Iran attaches importance to Iraq's security and independence,' Salehi said, stressing that Tehran would support 'strengthening of a lasting security in Iraq as well as its national sovereignty and independence.'

'A durable security would only be brought into Iraq by establishing a sovereign government,' Salehi added.

Meanwhile, The Iraqi foreign minister told IRNA that he believed the prospect of Tehran-Baghdad relations was bright.

While in Baghdad, Salehi is to discuss major bilateral, regional and international issues in separate meetings with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and Zebari./end
