Thai government is trying to help 7 Thais detained in Cambodia

BANGKOK, Jan 5 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban on Wednesday (Jan 5) confirmed the government is trying to help 7 Thais arrested by Cambodian soldiers. He warned protests near the Thai-Cambodian border will obstruct any assistance.

He confirmed that the help would reach all 7 Thais and denied claims the government intended to help only Democrat MP for Bangkok Panich Vikitsreth.

Suthep insisted that his government would base its actions on facts, so that Cambodia would not feel Thailand was distorting any information. He also stressed that the 7 Thais had no intention to cause any trouble, but had only planned to see demarcation posts in response to complaints from local villagers.

The deputy prime minister admitted that he was worried about movements along the Thai-Cambodian border. He thanked activists and concerned officials for trying to prevent clashes.

Suthep also wishes Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen prioritise bilateral relations and use his authority to relieve the situation.

“I have tried to contact Somdej Hun Sen but to no avail. We did not contact each other directly. Former coordinators are trying to make contacts,” Mr Suthep said.

Regarding the Thai prime minister’s order for the director-general of the Royal Thai Survey Department to inspect the area where the 7 Thais were arrested, Suthep said this was intended to find facts as it was a disputed area. He said that demarcation would settle the dispute, and both countries were deploying their forces in the area to prevent the expansion of communities there.

Asked to comment on the video clip in which Mr Panich was seen as saying he was trespassing on the Cambodian soil, Mr Suthep said that the actual video clip was longer than what was posted on the net but only one part of it was publicized for some gains. Mr Suthep said that Thailand did not release the clip and that it was difficult to help the 7 Thai people because someone in the group had been arrested allegedly for trespassing on the Cambodian soil before.
