Int'l travellers spend over Bt20bn for New Year in Thailand

BANGKOK, Jan 5 (TNA) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported that international travellers had spent more than 20 billion baht for their recent New Year celebrations in the Kingdom.

Thawatchai Aranyik, Deputy TAT Governor for Domestic Market, said that the money was actively spent by both Thai and foreign tourists from early December 2010 until the New Year festival, particularly those visiting Thailand's northern region, including Chiang Mai, where additional flights, from earlier scheduled, were needed to serve a large number of international visitors and most local hotel rooms were booked.

Thawatchai revealed that Thailand's southern region had also attracted at least 75 per cent of international visitors during the New Year celebrations--compared with the corresponding period in the previous year, particularly in Phuket, Samui Island in Surat Thani and Krabi where most local hotel rooms had been reserved.

The TAT deputy governor said that he foresaw more international tourist arrivals in Thailand this year--based on an assumption that there were no factors to seriously affect the domestic tourism.

According to the TAT deputy governor, domestic tourism will be further promoted this year to not only earn the Kingdom more tourism-related revenues, but also support personnel in Thai tourism-related businesses and social networking among international visitors.

TAT will also work with local tourism clubs or associations to further upgrade quality of standard tour buses and drivers to ensure safety for international travellers across Thailand. (TNA)
