NKorea confirms intention to strive for denuclearising peninsula.
PYONGYANG, January 4 (Itar-Tass) - North Korea confirms "its
determination to strive for denuclearising the Korean Peninsula and
ensuring peace in North East Asia", writes on Tuesday the leading party
newspaper Rodong Sinmun, expressing the opinion of the country's
leadership.
The newspaper notes that the country's powerful military potential of
containment "helped last year to scuttle attempts by imperialists at
establishing their sway in the world through military blackmail".
In this connection, Rodong Sinmun points to effectiveness of the North
Korean militarily oriented policy (songun) which "has become a reliable
guarantor of security of the Korean nation". The newspaper notes that it
is precisely thanks to this North Korean policy that "it was possible to
preserve peace in the Korean Peninsula and all over Asia".
The term "songun policy" came into frequent use in North Korea at the
turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The songun notion is translated as
"the army first" or "militarily oriented policy". Songun ideas were
proclaimed by Kim Jong-Il in December 1994.
However, the North Korean mass media began paying special attention to
the term since the start of 2001 when George Bush became the US president
who started pursuing a tough policy against North Korea.
