Thai Cabinet endorses plans to assist Thai detainees in Cambodia

BANGKOK, Jan 4 (TNA) - The Thai Cabinet endorsed Tuesday (Jan 4) official plans to assist seven Thai detainees in Cambodia.

Acting Government Spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn told a press conference the Thai Cabinet had acknowledged the plans reported by Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, including those involving his ministry's coordinating processes with Cambodian authorities.

Panitan, who is also Deputy Secretary General to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, said the Thai foreign minister revealed that a clear direction on the issue should be seen over the next couple of days, and that his ministry would sent two lawyers to fight for the seven Thai nationals if the case was filed with a Cambodian court.

The spokesman said the Thai foreign minister also reported to the Cabinet that the seven Thai detainees had been taken good care by Phnom Penh.

According to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, none of the seven Thai detainees intended to intrude onto the Cambodian soil or to cause any adverse effect on bilateral relations between Thailand and neighbouring Cambodia, but they were inspecting the situation after local villagers complained that they had been barred from accessing their own farmlands along the border.

The premier's deputy secretary general said that the Royal Thai Survey Department under the Royal Thai Armed Forces is verifying whether the seven Thai nationals were arrested in the Thai or the Cambodian territory with a conclusion expected by this evening--when the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs will also clarify the issue to the public in a televised broadcast nationwide at 8:30 pm.
