Thailand’s Airport Rail Link starts its full-scale services

BANGKOK, Jan 4 (TNA) - Thai Airport Rail Link started its full-scale services between inner Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi Airport Tuesday (Jan 4) with a handful of passengers on its services.

Ground service personnel from Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airways have been stationed at early check-in counters at Makkasan Station air terminal where passengers bound for Suvarnabhumi Airport can check-in and have their luggage loaded 3-12 hours prior to their flights. A handful of air passengers have used the early check-in counters with full-fares—the Express Line from Makkasan Station to Suvarnabhumi Airport at 150 baht, up from the initial 100 Baht fare during its trail-run period.

Yuthana Thapcharoen, governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), said the City Line proved to be very popular in the past 3-4 months of its test run. The number of its daily ridership peaked at 47,000 people. He said the raised fares were still very low when they were compared with the fares of other transport modes to Suvarnabhumi Airport, or in the case for those overseas travelling to airports. He expects the Thai State Railway to generate an income of least Bht1 million per day (Bht30 million a month) from the launching of full-scale services which will carry a projected 50,000 passengers a day after a year into its operations.
