Supreme Leader: A single song can move a nation

Tehran, Jan 4, IRNA – Supreme Leader said 14 years ago at a circle of Iranian musicians on important role music can play in moving a nation, asking them to do all they can to save music from rolling into cradle of material temptation and guide it towards exaltation.

Due to the importance of the matter today, and the enlightening nature of that address, IRNA is hereby covering excerpts of notes by his eminence.

'Although I have no technical knowledge of music and my judgment on musicians cannot be based on justice, due to my human nature, that is based on personal innate preferences and temptations I can say that you performed a very fine piece.'

'Music is a noteworthy matter in the society, particularly in radio and TV broadcasting. Of course I am not going to elaborate on music comprehensively, as that calls for special other conditions. Here, at this music studio, it is suitable to talk about this art from a different angle.

In old times' categorization of the sciences, music was considered a branch of arithmetic's. It is a delicate art. In other words, the art of music is based on the human nature. Human wisdom has calculated the harmony among tunes based on experience and devised rules based on the trial and error rule aimed at its advancement towards perfection.'

'Of course the westerners have achieved great advancements in music fields and devised precise disciplines there, so the situation there differs.

'We can thus deduct that the art of music is a combination of sciences, thoughts and God-given talent, which is composed by the human beings. So as you notice, the main cornerstone of music is divine.'

'I wish to tell you gentlemen – those who play instruments, the singers, and the composers – spend this art that is the fruit of God given blessings, and organized in accordance with a taste, an innate nature, and a fine and wise discipline, and is in fact giving life to the dead matters, in the way of pleasing God.'

Unfortunately the objective of music in the east – I mean in Iran and the Arab world, since I am not aware of the status of music in India, China and the Far East countries – throughout the past long centuries, either before the advent of Islam, or after it, … has not been at the service of exalted objectives, unlike the process of music in Europe.'

'You know that I a typically an anti-west personality, so that none of the particular features of the west is capable of attracting me, or causing my astonishment. Meanwhile, I also do emphasize on positive aspects of the west, painstakingly. One of them is their music.

It is true that there is grouse music in the west, but right there in the world, from very old times, there has been meaningful and teaching music; a type of music that is worth buying tickets for the wise human beings to listen to at concert halls for hours and enjoy the music.

In the west there have been music pieces at times that have saved a whole nation, or guided the believers in a thought into a right direction. In the east, about which I spoke (the region we focused on), unfortunately the music has not been that much prestigious.'

In the region that the history of our music has taken shape, music does not have a proper meaning. You must give it meaning and sense; and in fact be its saviors.'

'The musicians did not pay the due attention they should have, to music. I do not mean we have not had good works in the field. There definitely have been, as we sit here and listen to you work. I am not a type to sit and listen to grouse music that is Haram (forbidden) in our jurisprudence.

That which was Haram in this are before has remained Haram. There is no reservation in dealing with Haram, and as a religious person, my meter stick is the jurisprudence, with no reservations. Yet, the efforts of some devoted and pious personalities in the field of music from the beginning of the revolution have been good and satisfactory, despite the lack of that comprehensive care that should have been taken, and has not.'

'Do not forget the point that singing is one of the positive points of our music. Basically, the point of strength of the Persian and the Arabic music pieces is that singing comprises a major part of them.'

'I am not encouraging you to compose sad music, or a music that has no enthusiasm behind it; I am inviting you to get exalted and to save the phenomenon of music from the quagmire of material temptation of the mankind.'

I remember in the past when we are busy fighting (against the past regime) once there was a discussion about the symphonies of Beethoven. I heard from some informed people that a piece composed by a Russian musician called Aliev, who was inspired by a category of the Persian music, called Shour, save Russia in the course of the World War!

Inspired by your music a musician ahs composed a piece that has moved a nation. I do not know Aliev and I have not heard that piece, but I know what Shour is and I know that a talented musician can create motion in an entire nation.' 'Be after that type of music./end
