Government to prevent clash of Thai people over border issue

BANGKOK, Jan 4 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thuagsuban is afraid that Thai protesters near the Thai-Cambodian border may cause greater problems. He asked local authorities in the border province to prevent a clash between different groups of Thai people.
Regarding attempts to help Democrat MP for Bangkok Panich Vikitsreth and six other Thai people who are detained in Cambodia, Deputy PM Suthep Thuagsuban said that Thailand had to be patient and try to convince Cambodian Premier Hun Sen to prioritise bilateral relations and base solutions to the issue on facts. He said that Thai and Cambodian leaders were negotiating through their foreign affairs ministries.
Suthep admitted that he was worried about members of the Thai Patriots Network who will stage a protest near the Thai-Cambodian border in Sa Kaeo province. He said that their protest could lead to conflicts at local and national levels.
The deputy premier said he understands the feeling of the Thai people who are worried about the fate of compatriots but there are people who agree with and those who disagree with the movement. Especially local people do not want a problem in the border area that can affect their life. So he would like the so-called "patriotic Thais" group of activists to stop their movement and let the government work.
The deputy prime minister said that he believed the governments of both countries could solve the issue of the arrest of the Thai people by themselves and would not need another ASEAN member to mediate. He believes the issue can be settled before Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An visits Thailand in the near future.
As Noppadol Pattama, a lawyer of ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, offered help, Suthep said that help from any party was good but he declined to say whether he needed help from the former prime minister. (TNA)
