Iranian MPs outraged by Queen Elizabeth’s decision

TEHRAN, Jan. 2 (MNA) – Iranian MPs strongly responded to Queen Elizabeth’s decision to grant Knighthood to British Ambassador to Iran Simon Gass, saying the move indicates the British government’s hostility toward Iran.

Gass was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) in the 2011 New Year Honors.

Gass came under fire from Iranian officials after writing a note in his blog to mark the International Human Rights Day (December 10) in which he accused the Islamic system of violating political and civil rights and imposing restrictions on the activities of the journalists and political activists.

MP Hamid Rasaii said, “I think that British ambassador has shown complete servility toward the British government whose interests match the Zionist regime’s interests.”

Rasaii told that it is completely natural that the British queen honors him, because the British ambassador has acted in line with the British government’s policy on Iran.

He went on to say that now the Iranian government should take action and refuse Gass entry into Iran.

He also said that the diplomatic relationship with the British government should be reduced to the lowest level.

On December 19, the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee voted to completely cut relations with London. The decision was then submitted to the Majlis presiding board. The motion should be put to a vote in the Majlis.

Head of the Majlis Foreign Relations Committee Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh has also disapproved of the Queen Elizabeth’s move, urging the Iranian officials to take reciprocal actions.

“It is a long time that the British ambassador to Tehran has not acted as an ambassador and has gone beyond a diplomat’s area of activity” Falahatpisheh told today.

He also expressed hope that the Majlis votes in favor of the proposal for reduction of ties with the Britain in order to prevent the British diplomat from taking hostile moves against Iran.

Head of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi also condemned the appointment of Simon Gass as Knight Commander.

“Granting this title (to Gass) is a seal of approval to wrong actions of the British ambassador to Tehran, so we condemn the move,” Boroujerdi told reporters on the sidelines of the parliament session on Sunday.

This move proves that the Britain is continuing its hostile policy toward Iran, he added.
