Gillard issues Terminator rallying cry
The Australian cricket team might have lost the Ashes, but Prime Minister Julia
Gillard has promised the English: "We'll be back!"
Evoking Arnold Schwarzenegger's character The Terminator ahead of the fifth and
final Test match of the series, beginning in Sydney on Monday, Ms Gillard fired the
warning shot while hosting the Australia and England teams to afternoon tea at
Kirribilli House.
England hold an unassailable 2-1 Ashes series lead going into the final match.
While conceding Australia's performance had been under par, Ms Gillard urged England
captain Andrew Strauss not to get too carried away.
"In great sporting rivalries and great sporting contests there are some good times
and some bad times," Ms Gillard told the players on Saturday afternoon.
"And from the point of view of the Australians, we've not been enjoying the best of
times.
"But can I say to our friends who have joined us from England, we are a resilient
people and we'll be back! ... We will be back!"
Strauss said his team had enjoyed Sydney's New Year fireworks, dining out at a city
restaurant.
And, they'd had a light training session on Saturday morning.
"It's actually one of the great honours in any English cricketer's life to go on an
Ashes tour, and it's not just because we don't have to endure an English winter,"
Strauss said.
"But it's also because Australia's an amazing country."
Injured Australia captain Ricky Ponting thanked the England players for coming.
He also congratulated Michael Clarke for his promotion to acting Australia captain
for the final match.
