Thai government trying to help 7 Thais detained in Cambodia

BANGKOK, January 1 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs insists it is trying to help the seven Thai people who were arrested by Cambodian authorities. It expects clear progress in the attempt next week and confirms its readiness to seek their bail when they are brought to a court.

Speaking of the attempt to help Democrat MP for Bangkok Panich Vikitsreth and six other persons, Chavanond Intarakomalsut, secretary to the Thai foreign affairs minister, said that on Saturday (Jan 1) Mr Panich’s wife Patchareeporn Vikitsreth left for Cambodia to visit Mr Panich at the Prey Sar prison. She is likely to receive a permission to visit Mr Panich in the next few days. However, the possibility of helping the Thai people should become clearer when their case reaches a court next week. A lawyer will immediately seek their bail but the decision will depend on the court.

As the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) uses the arrest of the Thai people as a reason for their protest, Chavanond said that the government would inform the PAD with facts to prove that the government did not ignore the fate of the Thai people.

"The foreign minister visited Cambodia to meet Hor Namhong, the Cambodian foreign minister, to seek cooperation. The prime minister has expressed a concern and ordered quick assistance for the seven Thai people. I insist that the issue will not affect bilateral relations," Chavanond said.

In response to the report that Cambodia presented a video clip to prove that the seven Thai people really encroached on the Cambodian soil, Chavanond said that the government ordered concerned authorities including the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Royal Thai Survey Department to verify the Cambodian claim and check how deep the Thai people had entered into the Cambodian territory in case that they had really crossed the border. The information will support the defense of the Thai people during their trial. If the people were really one kilometer deep inside the Cambodian territory, the Thai government would ask Cambodia to sympathize with the people and release them, Chavanond said. (TNA)
