Strict control against Thai gamblers visiting casinos in Cambodia

CHANTHABURI, January 1 (TNA) - Immigration police in Thailand’s eastern Chanthaburi province exercise strict control at their border checkpoints as crowds of Thai gamblers are likely to cross the border to visit nearby Cambodian casinos during New Year holidays.

Lt Col Setthapat na Songkhla, an immigration inspector of Chanthaburi, said that he ordered immigration police at all the five Thai-Cambodian border passes in Chanthaburi to thoroughly check Thai people who crossed the border to nearby casinos in Cambodia from today until January 4. The strict control happens at border checkpoints in Soi Dao and Pong Nam Ron districts. The measure is emphasized at border checkpoints in Ban Laem and Ban Khlong Yai villages as Cambodian casinos are located just next to the border checkpoints.

If any Thai government officials cross the border to visit Cambodian casinos, immigration police will report their visits to their supervisors because the visits violate their disciplines. Immigration police will also take legal actions if they are involved in any legal violation or narcotic businesses.

Lt Col Setthapat said he also asked Cambodian immigration police to oversee the behaviors of Thai people who visited Cambodian casinos and watch out for anyone who might try to smuggle illicit products into Thailand.

About 700-800 Thai people cross the border through the five passes in Soi Dao and Pong Nam Ron districts of Chanthaburi every day. The figure should rise to 1,000 a day during these New Year holidays. Therefore, immigration police are imposing strict control to limit the number of Thai gamblers visiting nearby Cambodian casinos.
