Thai PM expects no violence in next general election

BANGKOK, Dec 31 (TNA) - Thailand’s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Friday (Dec 31) he is confident that the next general election will be free of violence but he doubted that coalition parties will maintain their alliance then.

The Thai Prime Minister said he believes that the next general election will be full of fierce competition but order will be likely because, he said, most people do not want to see violence.

The Democrat Party has its secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban as its vote campaign director. Suthep will start to work in this capacity early next year to prepare for the next election.

Abhisit said the Democrat party will campaign for votes with the existing policies of the government as well as the new policies that will provide Thai people with additional social security, welfare, and economic and social development.

The premier did not confirm if coalition parties would still team up with one another after the next election.

Meanwhile, Banharn Silpa-archa, chief adviser to the Chart Thai Pattana Party, has a similar view. He said he is not worried about political situations next year although the government will face another censure debate. Regarding the prime minister’s remark that he will dissolve the House and pave the way for the next general election after constitutional amendment, Banharn said that everything would be done smoothly and the Chart Thai Pattana Party was always ready for a general election.

He did not confirm if his party would still team up with the Democrat Party. He only said that regarding the present alliance both parties could get along with each other despite some disputes. (TNA)
