Man shoots woman, himself at station
A man has shot himself dead after shooting a woman in the face, seriously injuring her, at a Melbourne railway station late this afternoon.
The shooting happened about 5.20pm (AEST) at Sydenham railway station in Melbourne's
west, Victoria Police said.
"We believe a male has shot a female in the car park and he has then turned the
firearm on himself," a police spokeswoman said.
The man died at the scene after shooting himself in the head, and the female has
been shot in the face, the spokeswoman said.
Paramedics are taking the woman to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition.
Police spokeswoman Sergeant Creina O'Grady said the gunman was a 55-year-old man
from Keilor Downs and the woman is 49 and from Sydenham.
It is understood they are a separated couple.
Two police from Altona North regional response unit were in the area and responded
quickly to emergency calls from witnesses, Sgt O'Grady said.
They confronted the man in the car park, but the man turned the gun on himself
without firing on police.
His body remained in the car park under a tarpaulin.
About 80 cars have been blocked in the car park while police undergo the lengthy
task of processing the crime scene.
The woman was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition with at
least one gunshot wound to the face, Sgt O'Grady said.
Homicide detectives are on their way.
