DPRK should return to non-proliferation regime & under IAEA control
MOSCOW, December 30 (Itar-Tass) - North Korea should return to the
non-proliferation regime and under IAEA control as a non-nuclear state,
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin told a news conference
on Thursday.
"Our stand on the uranium programme of the DPRK has been spelled out
in the ministry's statement," the diplomat noted. "Regrettably, this
programme runs counter to statements by the Six of September 19, 2005 and
UN Security Council resolution 1874."
"We do not put into doubt that North Korea has the right to develop
peaceful atom and to use its advantages in the interests of the national
economy and development of science," Borodavkin explained. "But we know
well that the development of peaceful atom in the DPRK depends on the
country's return to the regime of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
under IAEA guarantees. Pyongyang should return to these regimes as a
non-nuclear state."
"We hope that it will be possible to bring down tension in the region and to resume the six-party talks."
