SMES URGED TO PRODUCE QUALITY HALAL PRODUCTS FOR EXPORT
By Yuri Azhar
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- Small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) have been urged to produce quality and competitive halal products for untapped international markets including China and India.
Abdul Kabur Ibrahim, chief executive officer of The Exporters Club Sdn Bhd, said the market for halal products was now expanding and Malaysia had the potential to be among the main suppliers of halal products worldwide.
"In fact, one the biggest supplier for Tesco in United Kingdom comes from Malaysia and they (Tesco) have also provided an area for Halal products in the supermarket," he told Bernama at the sideline of a seminar for SMEs at the
Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre here Monday.
Other countries Malaysia could export its Halal products to are the United States, France, Germany and the Netherlands, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia, he said.
Meanwhile, on the seminar Monday, entitled "Supplying Your Products to Supermarket in Malaysia", he said it provided an opportunity for participants to meet and establish contacts with buyers in the supermarket industry.
Speakers at the seminar included buyers from local supermarkets.
Abdul Kabur said the main objective of the seminar was to give participants the understanding of procedures in supplying products to supermarkets.
He said many SMEs were not aware of the procedures needed for supplying products to supermarkets.
When asked on the current problems being faced by local SMEs, he said pricing was a major concern due to the high cost of production.
Others include low level of knowledge on promoting their products in the international market.
He said the one-day seminar was also intended to give the participants guidelines on exporting their products.
Abdul Kabur said The Exporters Club was also planning to set up
distribution centres in several parts of Africa by end of this year with the focus to be on consumer products such as food, rubber, palm oil and timber.
