Seven Thais still detained in Cambodia, authorities confirm

BANGKOK, Dec 30 (TNA) - Thai authorities have confirmed that seven Thai people--who were arrested by Cambodian soldiers on Wednesday (Dec 29), have still been detained in Cambodia and they are trying to coordinate with Phnom Penh to seek their freedom.

The authorities said today that the Thai Embassy to Cambodia has been informed of the arrest and detention of the Thai nationals, including a Democrat MP and former Bangkok deputy governor, Panich Vikitsreth, and a yellow-shirt leading activist, Veera Somkwamkid, and has been in a process of negotiation with Phnom Penh for their release.

According to the Thai authorities, a Thai Army command in charge of security in the Thai-Cambodian border has also sent an officer for talks with the Cambodian authorities.

The Thai nationals, led by the ruling Democrat Party MP Panich, were apprehended by the Cambodian troops when they inspected a contentious area along the border near a checkpoint in Ban Nong Jan area of Thailand's eastern Sa Kaeo Province--following reports that Cambodian troops had crossed the border onto the Thai soil. The seven Thais were accused of illegally entering the Cambodian territory.

Earlier, Charoen Kanthawong, Chairman of the Joint Thai-Cambodian Boundary Commission or JBC, said yesterday afternoon that Chavanont Intarakomalsut, Secretary to Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, had confirmed the release of the seven Thai nationals by Cambodian authorities. But the Thai authorities later acknowledged that the seven Thai people have not yet been released. (TNA)
