Thai authorities confirm no tsunami during New Year celebrations

BANGKOK, Dec 29 (TNA) - Thailand's Meteorological Department has confirmed that there is no sign of any tsunami during the New Year festival, as many agencies are campaigning for road safety to minimize losses.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thuagsuban, who heads the Thai government's road safety center, opened an ad-hoc New Year road safety command in Bangkok today and expressed his gratitude to all parties concerned for their contribution to national attempts to prevent and reduce road accidents this year.

Suthep said the Thai government intends to halve the number of road accidents by 2020 to meet international safety standards, and that the government is seriously campaigning for the nationwide and strict use of crash helmets, as official statistics show that most road accidents, or 75-80 per cent, happen to motorcycles.

The deputy premier said the government is also campaigning for speed limits because fast driving is a major cause of road accidents. (TNA)
