Cambodia releases seven Thais

BANGKOK, Dec 29 (TNA) - Cambodia has released seven Thai people who were arrested and detained earlier on Wednesday (Dec 29).

Charoen Kanthawong, Chairman of the Joint Thai-Cambodian Boundary Commission or JBC, said this afternoon that Chavanont Intarakomalsut, Secretary to Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, had confirmed the release of the seven Thai nationals by Cambodian authorities.

Earlier, the Thai government sent representatives to hold talks with the Cambodian authorities to seek for the release of the seven Thai people, including a Democrat MP and a former Bangkok deputy governor, Panich Vikitsreth, and a yellow-shirt core activist, Veera Somkwamkid. The Thai foreign minister reported that the seven Thai nationals had travelled to a border area in Thailand's eastern Sa Kaeo Province and were captured by the Cambodian military.

Meanwhile, Panich insisted that he and the six other Thai nationals were on the Thai soil when they were arrested and detained by Cambodian soldiers. The Democrat MP was speaking during a telephone interview with local media before being released. (TNA)
