Thai FM admits it’s difficult to prove Thaksin is making a political movement

BANGKOK, Dec 28 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said on Tuesday (Dec 28) he had asked the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other countries that accommodate fugitive former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to prohibit the ex-premier from making a political movement. However, he admits it is difficult to prove that the meeting of Thaksin and opposition Puea Thai Party MPs was a political movement.
Kasit insisted that his government had not given up its efforts to convince other countries to extradite Thaksin for prosecution in Thailand. He has contacted the countries that have reportedly accommodated Thaksin and those countries confirmed that they would not let Thaksin make any political movements on their soil. Consequently, Thaksin made fewer communications to the public in Thailand.
Regarding the recent meeting of Thaksin and some Puea Thai Party MPs in the United Arab Emirates, the foreign minister said there was nothing to prove the meeting was a political movement. Therefore, the judiciary of the concerned country should make its own judgment on the accommodation for Thaksin.
“We have filed our requests with all the countries but decisions are up to them and I said at the first place that they need a clear proof that it is a criminal case. But they wonder if the case has any political significance,” the Thai foreign minister noted.
Kasit said for Dubai, the Thai foreign ministry has informed them for dozens of times. The ministry has contacted the UAE because Dubai is part of the UAE but the decision is up to them. They have their own judgment and their own justice system. They will decide whether they will cooperate.(TNA)
