Authorities organize New Year party for Thai elderly

BANGKOK, Dec 28 (TNA) - Bangkok's Ban Bang Khae welfare home organised a New Year party for the elderly and mentally-disabled children on Tuesday (Dec 28).

The New Year gathering at the Ban Bang Khae Social Welfare Development Centre for Older Persons began with a traditional alms-giving to 19 Buddhist monks, attended by government officials and the general public, followed by a set of New Year celebration activities for nearly 400 elderly living at the centre and nearby communities.

The Centre’s Director, Pruetinun Leungphaibool, said the event will provide the elderly with a chance for merit makings and a family-like warmth of love, care and happiness from officials and the general public to boost their morale and spirit.

Children with mental disabilities also joined the New Year party--in which game contests, a drawing of lots for prizes and gifts, presented by donors, and on-stage performances were also included.

Pruetinun said that donated items from the public for the elderly, including food products and gifts, are always welcome even after the New Year festival season.

Ban Bang Khae, formerly known as Bang Khae Home for Older Persons, was established in 1953 as the first residential care institution for the elderly, representing Thailand's provision of established welfare services to the elderly.(TNA)
