Snow falls in Hobart hills

Hobart, AAP - It wasn't quite a white Christmas, but Hobart's residents were treated to an out-of-season dump of snow when they awoke on Monday.
Cold and damp conditions across the Apple Isle caused rain to fall as snow on Mt Wellington in Hobart's south, where the overnight temperature dropped to just minus three degrees.
The Bureau of Meteorology's Ray Evans said the snow would melt as the cold front subsided.
"It was only fairly light snowfalls," he said.
"Most of it has melted away and will continue to melt away as the day gets warmer."
Mr Evans said it was not unheard of for Australia's chilliest capital to see snow at this time of the year.
"It's unusual, but not unprecedented," he said.
"There's quite a few records of snow falling in December."
