Japan urges for quick investigation into a Japanese cameraman’s death

BANGKOK, Dec 27 (TNA) - A Japanese diplomat to Thailand has urged for quick investigation into the death of a Japanese cameraman killed during the anti-government protests in April earlier this year.

Nobuaki Ito, minister (political) to the Embassy of Japan in Bangkok, met Thailand’s Prime Minister’s Office Minister Ong-art Klampaibul at Government House Monday morning (Dec 27) to inquire about the progress of investigation into the death of Japanese cameraman Hiroyuki Muramoto who was killed during a political protest in Bangkok last April.

After the meeting that lasted over an hour, Mr Ong-art said that the talk was friendly and Japan urged concerned officials to accelerate the investigation. He said that the Japanese diplomat insisted that his meeting was not intended to exert any pressure or intervene in the justice system of Thailand and Japan did not set any deadline for the Thai government to take any action.

Ong-art said he explained that the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) was conducting the investigation in line with the justice system and the government could not intervene in its investigation process.

The minister also denied the government intended to delay the investigation.

Ong-art said he believed that Japan would understand and would not doubt the process of the Thai justice system, especially the process of finding what exactly had happened during the past political turmoil in the country that would need some times for careful consideration to ensure justice.

He said he is confident that despite slow progress in the investigation, bilateral relations should remain intact.

Regarding the remark of Puea Thai MP and red shirt protest leader Jatuporn Prompan that a government official had shot the Japanese cameraman dead, Ong-art said that the Japanese diplomat admitted that Japan took the information from Jatuporn for consideration but it did not decide whether the information was reliable or not because information distortion was rampant for the time being.

Ong-art said that the Thai government already explained that Jatuporn was trying to frame it.(TNA)
