Thai Deputy PM visits flood-hit areas in South

BANGKOK, Dec 27(TNA) - Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban visited flood-hit areas in the southern region on Monday (Dec 27) to inspect progress on the government's assistance plans for victims of recent floods and storms.

Accompanied by Army Commander-in-Chief General Prayuth Chan-o-cha, Suthep, who oversees national security, told reporters before his departure from Bangkok that he would inspect the affected areas in Pattani and Songkhla Provinces.

The deputy premier said he would also brief local security authorities and forces on the government's policy on the far South next year to comply with the Southern Border Province Administration Act, which takes effect in January 2011.

Suthep added that local security authorities and officers would follow Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's policy and decision on lifting the emergency decree in some areas in the deep South and have proposed areas where the state of emergency should be revoked.

The deputy prime minister insisted that local security forces have respected people's rights over the past two years--when the emergency decree has been enforced in the sensitive zones in the southernmost region. (TNA)
