Iran to pursue case of Iranian refugees wounded in Australia boat crash

TEHRAN, Dec. 27 (MNA) -- Iran`s Foreign Ministry will pursue the case of Iranian asylum seekers who were wounded in a boat incident in Australia,Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast announced.

Talking to reporters here on Sunday, Mehmanparast said, “The Foreign Ministry sees itself as responsible to pursue the affairs of its nationals and will follow the case through diplomatic channels and based on the Vienna Convention on Consular relations 1963 as well as other international documents.”

More than 20 asylum seekers died after their boat smashed against jagged rocks on Christmas Island, off the northwest coast of Australia on December 15.

Up to 80 asylum seekers including women and children were onboard a wooden Indonesian fishing boat when it crashed near Flying Fish Cove. The asylum seekers were reportedly Iraqi and Iranian, although it was unclear where their journey originated.
