Thai PM orders police to suppress narcotics seriously

BANGKOK, Dec26 (TNA) –Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday thanked police for meeting his government’s policy to suppress narcotics in the past two years and called for constant and nationwide fights against narcotics.
Delivering his policies to the police at the parliament building in Bangkok, the Thai premier said his government placed importance on narcotic suppression. He thanked police for meeting the policy by taking active actions against the use of illicit drugs in the past two years and arresting more wrongdoers.
Abhisit said he wanted the police to conduct serious narcotic fights continuously in all areas. Without the continuation, he said, narcotic problems would grow again.
The prime minister also urged the police to do their best to ensure national order as his government has already stopped the imposition of emergency decree in the greater Bangkok and other provinces.
“Police have more tasks to do”, Abhisit said.
Abhisit quoted national police chief Police General Wichean Potephosree as saying that the police found the task of guaranteeing national order difficult because serious political conflicts persisted in the Thai society and movements by some groups of people were continuing.
However, he noted, police must enforce the law strictly. If police are able to do so, they can help restore national order.
Abhisit promised his government would improve the administrative structures of the police to promote power decentralization and participation. His government is also ready to provide necessary equipment to facilitate police’s work with communities and it will order other government agencies to support the work of the police.(TNA)
