National holiday road toll rises to 26
The national holiday road toll has risen to 26 with the deaths of two women in
Victoria and a man in NSW on Christmas Day.
A woman in her 20s died when a car hit a tree in Yarck, north of Melbourne, about
7.40am (AEDT), and the driver was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Earlier, a 66-year-old woman died in an accident in the Melbourne suburb of Narre
Warren South about 2am (AEDT).
Police believe the car ran off the road and hit a brick fence, flipped and came to
rest on its roof.
The 60-year-old female driver was airlifted to hospital after being trapped in the
wreckage for more than an hour.
In the central west NSW city of Bathurst, a man died after his vehicle collided with
a police car with warning lights and sirens activated about 3.10pm (AEDT) on
Saturday.
The elderly man was trapped for some time after the collision. He was taken to
Bathurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A male officer in the police car was uninjured.
Victoria's holiday road toll now stands at 10. Seven people have lost their lives on
Queensland's roads, five in NSW, two in Western Australia, while Tasmania and the
ACT have recorded one death each.
South Australia and the Northern Territory remain fatality free.
(EDS: National road toll figures are for the period 0001 December 17 to 2359 Monday
January 3. Some states and territories have different periods.)
