Thai PM promises to bring peace and stability to Thais as New Year gift

BANGKOK, Dec 25 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva says that his government will bring about peace, sustainable growth, stability and happiness to all Thais as a New Year's gift to them.

The prime minister made the pledge when he reported his administration's two-year performance to the public at Government House in Bangkok Friday evening, noting that his government has already implemented measures and laid down foundation for strong and sustainable economic and development for the Kingdom to achieve the goals.

Abhisit said Thailand's gross domestic product or GDP should, therefore, grow by some 7.9 per cent this year, with the unemployment rate dropping to 343,000 people or 0.9 per cent, exports soaring to 17.7 billion US dollars, tourist arrivals increasing to around 15.2 million and the Stock Exchange of Thailand or SET index rising to over 1,000 points--even though the government encountered economic, social and political constraints in the country, as well as a global economic crisis when it first took office in December 2008.

The Democrat premier revealed that his government's next goals are to increase revenues and welfare benefits for the public, including a 15-year free education scheme for students and monthly allowance schemes for the elderly and the disabled. Abhisit acknowledged that his administration has also seriously cracked down narcotics and corruption, as well as strived for national reconciliation. (TNA)
