Kazakh prlmnt ratifies SCO Antiterrorism Convention.

ASTANA, December 23 (Itar-Tass) -- Deputies of the upper chamber of
the Kazakh parliament have adopted the law on the ratification of the SCO
Antiterrorism Convention on Thursday.
Presenting the draft law in the parliament, Deputy Chairman of the
National Security Council Zhanat Zharasov said that "the ratification of
the convention serves the interests of the country's national security and
will be another step on the way of creating security in the whole SCO
space."
"The convention fixes socio-political understanding of terrorism,
establishes the limits of jurisdiction, fixes the norms regarding the
protection of sovereignty, gives an approximate list of interstate
measures to prevent terrorism, formulates grounds and the procedure of
rendering legal aid and defines forms of responsibility of juridical
persons in case of their involvement in terrorism," the parliament's
conclusion says.
The SCO Antiterrorism Convention was signed in Yekaterinburg on June
16, 2009. It is aimed to raise the effectiveness of interstate cooperation
of the SCO member-states in the field of opposing terrorism, its new
challenges and threats, as well as secure peace and security in the
region. The convention was ratified by Russia. The Kyrgyz parliament is
also considering it.
