Bangkok illuminates Ratchaprasong intersection to celebrate New Year Festival

BANGKOK, Dec 24 (TNA) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has illuminated Ratchaprasong intersection in central Bangkok and its vicinity to welcome Thais and foreign visitors to Christmas and New Year celebrations from today until January 31.

Taya Teepasuwan, deputy Bangkok governor, presided over a ceremony on Thursday night (Dec 23) to turn on decorative illuminations around Ratchaprasong intersection from Chidlom intersection along Rama I road to the BTS electric train station in front of the National Stadium.

The illuminations are aimed at attracting tourists and will be turned on from 6pm to 10pm from Friday (Dec 24) until January 31, 2011. On New Year’s Eve, the lightings will be switched on until 12am.

Mrs Taya said that Ratchaprasong is an important shopping area of Bangkok as there were well-known hotels and shopping centers. The area attracts a number of tourists who also arrive to celebrate Christmas and join activities to count down to the New Year every year, albeit recent political contentions during the Red-shirted encampment and its seizure of the junction.

The BMA initiated the Ratchaprasong illumination project to decorate the area with beautiful and multicolored lightings to send best wishes to visitors to Bangkok on the occasion of the New Year celebrations.

The City Hall also intends to publicize the important shopping area of Bangkok among both Thai and foreign people to boost tourism and the overall national economy and to distribute incomes among the general public.

The BMA also hopes the illumination project will impressively introduce visitors to the shopping district of Bangkok so that they will forward their positive impression to other people. (TNA)
