Better prospect forecast for Thai farm sector in 2011

BANGKOK, Dec 24 (TNA) - Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut said on Friday (Dec 24) that he foresees better prospect for Thailand's farm sector next year, but warning that input costs for key products need to be lowered to secure local farmers' income in the long-run.
Theera acknowledged although the Thai farm sector, particularly in crop plantations, forestry and agricultural services, has shrank by 0.9 per cent this year due to natural disasters, including severe drought and floods as well as outbreaks of insect pests which hit the country earlier this year, it is likely that the Thai agricultural sector will keep growing by 1.4-2.4 per cent next year--when overall produce and prices of most local farm products are expected to further rise, particularly for key crops and livestocks.
The minister insisted that the projected growth of the Thai farm sector will be maintained even though the Thai economy will continue to face impacts from the strong Thai baht and a global oil price hike.
Theera said his ministry will introduce measures to mitigate the problems of rising input costs of local farm produce, namely rubber extracts, to help local farmers secure higher income after their production costs. (TNA)
