Thai Irrigation expert forewarns severe drought

BANGKOK, Dec 23 (TNA) - Royal Irrigation Department Director-General Chalit Damrongsak said on Thursday (Dec 23) that he foresees severe water-shortages and drought to hit Thailand's non-irrigated areas next year, as an early plunge in water levels of several mainstream rivers and natural water sources in the country has now been observed.

Chalit noted that the depleting water levels in Thailand’s most waterways, particularly the Chao Phraya River, have been unanticipated with some areas being about to run dry-- similar to last year’s catastrophic water-shortages.

The Thai irrigation expert said he expects next year’s drought to become more dreadful with extended periods; while other 27 million acres of land within the country's irrigated zones will rely on water distribution plans from local reservoirs for living and conservation purposes, including for self-sufficient farming activities.

Chalit urged local farmers to limit their plantations to dry season crops to help save water and to ease impacts from the coming drought and water shortages. (TNA)
