One million sheep trucked from WA to SA

More than one million sheep have this year been moved out of drought-stricken parts
of Western Australia.
Livestock is being moved into the eastern states to avert a significant animal
welfare risk in WA.
Truck driver Bungy Treloar took the one millionth sheep for 2010 through Ceduna in
South Australia on Tuesday, with a load that took the number for the calendar year
to 1,000,047.
SA Agriculture Minister Michael O'Brien said Mr Treloar's load of sheep was going
from Wagin in WA to Keith in SA.
"The movement of sheep and cattle from the drought-stricken west to South Australia
and the eastern states is possibly the largest of its kind in Australian history,"
the minister said in a statement.
The number of cattle to be taken from WA in 2010 now totals 127,639.
More than one-third of all the stock is staying in SA.
Mr O'Brien says the restocking in SA could potentially generate $50 million in
additional revenue across the state's primary sector.
