Thailand uses more alternative energy

BANGKOK, Dec 23 (TNA) - Thailand's consumption of alternative energy has been rising, with use of natural gas for vehicles (NGV) alone almost doubling this year over 2009.

The Thai Department of Energy Business Director-General Pirapon Sakarin said local consumers and motorists had increasingly turned to natural gas, with domestic consumption of NGV this year jumping from 3,500 tonnes a day to 5,700 and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) up some 25.2 per cent year-on-year.

There has been a drop in use of fossil-based diesel by 0.7 per cent year-on-year and gasoline by 1.8 per cent year-on-year.

The Energy Ministry official said Thailand now heavily relied on imported LPG, and the country's energy situation next year will depend on the government's measures under its new civil development initiative and on whether a new gas separation plant at the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate in the eastern Rayong Province will be fully operational.(TNA)
