Medvedev urges India to develop cooperation with SCO.
MUMBAI, December 22 (Itar-Tass) --President Dmitry Medvedev has urged
India to develop more intensive cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization (SCO). At present, India has an observer status at this
organization (Tass comment).
"I believe India might more intensively cooperate in the SCO
framework. India might occupy a worthy place in the framework of this
organization aimed, above all, at ensuring security," President Medvedev
said at a meeting with students at the Indian Technological Institute.
As an example the Russian president mentioned cooperation in the BRIC
format, where economic issues are given priority.
"The international financial order was created in the period of
Bretton Woods agreements, in which neither India nor the Soviet Union or
any other developing economy took part," Medvedev said. At present, the
international financial order is established in the framework of the Group
of Twenty to which the BRIC format contributes as well, Medvedev said.
The quickly developing economies have managed to change the
distribution of quotas in the International Monetary Fund and the World
Bank in favour of our countries and the developing economies in
general. There are other possibilities for establishing contacts in a
regional format, but the main work should go ahead in the direction of
bilateral contacts, Medvedev said.
"We are open to a multilateral cooperation with India. India is our
close friend and partner. We are prepared to share all the opportunities
we enjoy with the Indian friends in the field of ensuring security and
economic growth," the Russian president declared.
The talks he held in New Delhi on Tuesday were aimed at the
accomplishment of precisely this goal - creating new mechanisms of
partnership. Around 30 documents, including documents on enhancing
security, have been signed, Medvedev said.
"Over the past 30 years we have walked a long way; but the history of
Soviet- Indian and Russo- Indian relations has always been perfect,"
Medvedev declared.
