Sanction committee lacks legal justification: Iran envoy

United Nations, New York, Dec 22, IRNA – Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mohammad Khazaee said on Tuesday that the sanction committee lacks legal justification.
Talking to IRNA, he added that Tehran does not officially recognize the sanction committee, its activities, its reports and its supervision.
He added that since Iran’s peaceful nuclear program poses no threat against the world, the UN Security Council should deal with security threats.
Khazaee reiterated that all technical reports so far released by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have proved the peaceful nature of the Islamic Republic’s atomic activities. Therefore there is no justification for considering the country’s nuclear program as a threat against the international security, he added.
Since the UN resolutions lack legal and international legitimacy, the committee supervising the implementation of the sanctions also lacks legitimacy, he noted.
Criticizing the approach of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon towards Iran, the Iranian envoy stressed that the UN chief is expected to play a more active and constructive role in sensitive developments in the Mideast region.
He also criticized the silence of the UN secretary-general towards the recent assassination of the Iranian nuclear scientist.
The Islamic Republic of Iran supports a fair international approach based on logic towards global issues, the envoy announced./end
