Foreign Ministry caretaker arrives in Turkey

Tehran, Dec 22, IRNA – Caretaker of Iran's Foreign Ministry Ali-Akbar Salehi arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, Wednesday morning to attend the ECO ministerial meeting.
The 19th meeting of the Economic Cooperation Council's member states is to be held in an Istanbul hotel on December 22.
Salehi is at the spotlight of the press and diplomatic circles present in Istanbul for the ECO meeting as this is his first mission as the caretaker of Iran's Foreign Ministry.
As an MIT graduate and also head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, Salehi is an experienced official in international relations.
The ECO experts ended their two-day meeting Tuesday night during which they have prepared an agenda for the ministerial meeting.
The ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey providing a platform to promote economic, technical and cultural cooperation among member states.
The organization was expanded in 1992 to include seven new members, namely Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
ECO members aim to establish a single market for goods and services, much like the European Union.
ECO's secretariat and cultural department are located in Tehran, its economic bureau is in Turkey and its scientific bureau is situated in Pakistan.
The 11th Heads of State and Government Summit of the ECO is also scheduled for December 23 in Istanbul with the participation of Turkish President Abdullah Gul and his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad./end
