Thai military to support police for New Year security

BANGKOK, Dec 22 (TNA) - Thai military will support the police in keeping order during New Year celebrations.
Lieutenant General Udomdej Sitabutr, Commanding General of Thailand's First Army Area Command, spoke of the Royal Thai Armed Forces' policy Wednesday (Dec 22)--when the revocation of the emergency decree in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan, and the dissolution of the government's Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situation took effect.
Lieutenant General Udomdej, in his capacity as director of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), explained that police will remain the forefront of security forces, backed by military police assigned by the Royal Thai Armed Forces.
He said that a new situation monitoring centre will also be set up under his ISOC division, to take care of the situation in areas under his first army area command's jurisdiction. This would focus on intelligence services in cooperation with the Metropolitan Police Bureau and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). Bomb disposal teams will also be formed as a precaution.
The first army area commander urged the public to pay a vital role in maintaining national security, with the lifting of the emergency decree, by providing tip-offs on suspicious acts or incidents through a military hotline on 1899. He asked political groups to organise any movement within the legal framework, to minimise impacts on the public and to avoid a re-enforcement of the emergency decree.
In response to Thai Police Chief, Police General Wichien Potphosri's recent remarks, that police forces will have to work harder following the lifting of the emergency decree, Lieutenant General Udomdej said military personnel are ready to provide immediate support if requested.(TNA)
