NEW DELHI, December 21 (Itar-Tass) - Nuclear power industry, space,
information technology, aviation, oil and gas sector, and an increase of
bilateral trade in general will be key topics at the talks that Russian
President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh are expected
to have in New Delhi as part of Medvedev's official visit to India.
"The sides will consider issues of deepening cooperation in the energy
sector, including nuclear power production," Medvedev's aide Sergei
Prikhodko told Itar-Tass.
"The major joint projects in this area are the construction of a
nuclear plant in Kudankulam in the south of India with Russian assistance
and the development of the Sakhalin-1 offshore oil and gas deposit" with
the participation of Indian Oil Corporation /ONGC/, he said.
"Russia is seeking to gain a foothold in the Indian market and it is
confident in its competitive advantages in the construction of nuclear
industry facilities," Prikhodko said.
The Kremlin spokesman said that the expansion of nuclear cooperation
with India had for a long time been under the ban the Nuclear Suppliers
Group. But now, "India is interested in joining the group and, unlike some
other countries, it has shown willingness to answer all questions. "
So far, India is building two blocks of the Kudankulam nuclear power
plant with Russia's assistance, while the existing road map for
cooperation between Russia and India in the field of nuclear energy
features the construction of twelve nuclear reactors in this country.
As reported previously, the director of the Russian Federal Nuclear
Corporation Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, said recently two of the twelve
units are currently bering adjusted for operation and another six will be
built in the years 2012 throgh to 2017. Four more reactors will be erected
after 2017.
"Cooperation with India in the field of nuclear energy should be
absolutely transparent, and that's why it's important to sign all the
necessary instruments for this," Prikhodko said.
As for cooperation in the oil and gas sphere, he mentioned the
interest of Indian companies towards working with Russia not only in
Sakhalin, but also in developing resources of the Caspian Sea.
Prikhodko did not rule out that the negotiations will also embrace
cooperation in defense-related technologies. After settling the situation
around the purchase of the Admiral Gorshkov cruiser by India, "no
problemses, exist in this sphere and the talks will most likely concern the
promotion of Russian aircraft. "
The Russian side is ready to broaden cooperation in the development of
the civilian aircraft, including the widebody jets, is it interested in
promoting the sales of the short-range Superjet airliner Ru-140 and Be-200
amphibious planes.
Also, Russia hopes that the Indian side will use the Russian global
satellite navigation system GLONASS, Prikhodko said.
