Thailand-Israel ink ‘safe’ labour deal for next year

BANGKOK,Dec 20(TNA) - The Thai and Israeli governments have inked a bilateral agreement on labour cooperation between the two nations.
Thai Labour Minister Chalermchai Sri-on signed the agreement with Israeli Ambassador to Thailand Itzhak Shoham in Bangkok today (Dec 20)--aimed to help save money of Thai nationals travelling to work in Israel--who previously paid up to 200,000-300,000 baht or US$6,600-9,900 to private brokers for a five-year employment in Israel, forcing several of them to become victims of human trafficking gangs due to insufficient pocketed money.
Under the government-to-government accord, Chalermchai said, the recruitment fee paid by Thai people wanting to work in Israel will be reduced to 120,000-150,000 baht each and the number of Thai natinals travelling to work in the Israeli farm sector is expected to reach 6,000-7,000 annually--meeting Israel's official quota and earning at least 7 billion baht to Thailand.
The Thai labour minister said that he expects Thai nationals can work in Israel under the new safe labour deal next year, and that private employment firms will be transformed into skills preparation centres providing language and cultural training for the Thai workers with their service fees for each worker limited to no more than 10,000 baht.
Chalermchai suggested Thai nationals interested in working in Israel contact his ministry's Department of Employment or provincial labour offices throughout the country for an official registration and a selection process his ministry will jointly conduct with the International Organization for Migration or IOM.(TNA)
