Thai export value surges sharply in November

BANGKOK, Dec 20(TNA)- Thai Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai reported Monday (Dec 20) that the value of Thai export in November 2010 stood at 17,700 million US dollars and rose by 28.45 % from the export value in the same month of last year.
She said the Thai export in the first 11 months of this year is estimated at 178,000 million US dollars and expanded by 29.15%, while the Thai import in the 11-month period amounted to 166,000 million US dollars and went up by 39.3%.
As a result, Thailand posted a trade surplus worth 407 million US dollars in November this year and the combined trade surplus from January to November this year stood at 11,800 million US dollars.
Mrs Porntiva said if the Thai export amounts to 14 - 15.5 billion US dollars this month, the export value throughout this year will exceed 190 billion US dollars and show an increment of 26 – 28 %. If the export value in December reaches 16-17 billion US dollars, the annual export amount will expand by 27.3-28.2% this year. She said her ministry believes the export should grow by 26-28% this year.
According to the minister, the Thai export increased in November thanks to export stimulation, the exercise of trade privileges under the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and cooperation on border trade.
Mrs Porntiva said that business operators were concerned about the fluctuations of foreign exchange rates. Many groups of exporters try to avoid the impacts of the baht appreciation by increasing their dollar-denominated trade and most buyers can still afford the prices of Thai exports. She believes that most exporters can cope with the fluctuations of foreign exchange rates and the baht appreciation that may continue next year.
The commerce minister said that the Thai export should increase by at least 10% next year and its value should exceed 210 billion US dollars.
The Commerce Ministry will try to promote Thai products in both existing and emerging markets, work out innovations and market Thai products through e-commerce.
In the cabinet meeting Tuesday (Dec21), the Commerce Ministry will propose measures to help Thai exporters and small and medium-sized enterprises. The ministry will also report requests for government help from the private sector. The requests include some tax measures that businesses need to reduce their costs. (TNA)
