Thailand to carry on border talks with Cambodia

BANGKOK, Dec 20(TNA)-Thailand’s Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya affirmed Monday (Dec 20) that Thailand will continue to hold talks with Cambodia to peacefully solve border problems with the neighbouring country.

Kasit, who is scheduled to return to Bangkok Monday afternoon after paying an official visit to Phnom Penh, insisted that Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen have agreed on the peaceful policy through continued talks at all levels and existing mechanisms, including the general Thai-Cambodian border committee (GBC) and the joint Thai-Cambodian border commission(JBC).

Kasit acknowledged that the Thai government will refer to the 2008 negotiation framework and the 2000 memorandum of understanding(MOU) on land border demarcation when holding talks with Phnom Penh, saying that his ministry has set up two teams to separately take care of land and marine border issues with Cambodia as Thai and Cambodian authorities are expected to start negotiations on marine border issues by March 2011 and his ministry's team in charge of land border issues has prepared for further talks and action--even a judicial process at the International Court of Justice if necessary.

Kasit said, however, Hun Sen had also told the Thai premier that Phnom Penh will wait for Thailand's procedures on a legal scrutiny to see whether three documents on pending Thai-Cambodian border issues are against the Thai Constitution.

Kasit noted that Thailand will continue to assist Cambodia based on bilateral agreements concluded earlier, including cooperation in education and transportation to improve living conditions of the Cambodian people.

The Thai foreign minister also affirmed the Thai government's policy on fostering and strengthening bilateral relations with Cambodia, saying that Bangkok and Phnom Penh also plan to jointly review the two countries' histories on relevant issues.(TNA)
