Thailand’s Army chief visits Cambodia

BANGKOK, Dec 20(TNA)-Thai Army Commander-in-Chief General Prayuth Chan-o-cha left for Cambodia Monday morning for an official visit to the neighbouring country scheduled for December 20-21.

Accompanied by commanders of the first and second army area commands, General Prayuth, who took office on October 1, said before his departure that he will introduce himself to the Cambodian authorities and discuss bilateral ties and issues on mutual interest between Bangkok and Phnom Penh, marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two neighbouring countries.

The new Thai army chief said that his meeting and talks with Cambodian authorities concerned during his two-day trip to Cambodia will secure bilateral relations between Thailand and Cambodia and will sustain peaceful co-existence between Thai and Cambodian people in the long run.

General Prayuth, however, dismissed reports that Thai troops have been withdrawn from a contentious area along the Thai-Cambodian border near the Preah Vihear Temple, saying that Thailand has, instead, re-aligned security forces along the common border in line with a recent move of the Cambodian side to avoid a confrontation between Thai and Cambodian soldiers.

The Thai army chief affirmed that Thai troops are ready to return to the area in case there is any untoward incident.(TNA)
