Work with farmers for 2nd green revolution:Kalam to scientists

New Delhi, Dec 18 (PTI) Pitching for a second green
revolution to meet the country's growing food needs, noted
scientist and former President APJ Abdul Kalam Saturday asked
farm scientists to work alongside farmers for increasing agri-
output.
"India has to now embark upon second green revolution,
which will enable it to further increase its productivity in
the agricultural sector," he said at an award giving ceremony.
"By 2020, India would require to produce over 340 million
tonnes foodgrains in view of population growth and increased
purchasing power," the noted scientist said after conferring M
S Swaminathan Award for leadership in Agriculture.
"Farm scientists shall work hand-in-hand with the farmers
by developing farmer-friendly technologies to help them
multiply their agri-produce many times," Kalam said.
The noted scientist emphasised on better value of
agriculture through organic farming.
"When the entire planet earth is faced with the problem
of climate change, there is a need for farmers, agricultural
planners, educationists and researchers to increase the
quantum of organic farming in the country," he added.
Kalam pointed the example of Taiwan in developing
toxic-free organic farming in this regard. The reputed
scientist also emphasised on better soil and water management
for enhancing farm production.
Earlier, Kalam conferred 5th M S Swaminthan award for
leadership in agriculture to Sanjay Rajaram, globally known
for his valuable contributions in wheat breeding.
Rajaram contributed towards the development of as many as
480 wheat varieties that have been released in 51 countries
and are grown on an estimated 58 million hectares worldwide.
The award has been instituted by TASS (Trust for
Advancement of Agricultural Sciences). World famous farm
scientist Norman Borlough was the first winner of the award.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Food K V Thomas and
noted agri-scientist and MP, M S Swaminathan spoke of
providing latest technology and more facilities to farmers
