Thai Prime Minister reports progress of national reform plan

BANGKOK,Dec19(TNA)-Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Sunday the national reform plan of his government would focus on public welfare, education and justice. He expects the work in these areas will reduce inequality in the society and be a New Year gift for Thai people.
Regarding better welfare and solutions for the underprivileged, the Thai premier said his government would ensure good nutrition for pregnant women and the women who are breastfeeding their babies for the good health of both mothers and newborns. The government would also support daycare centers in villages and workplaces.
Besides, Abhisit said, his government would solve the problem of land shortage for people. It would form a public organisation to function as a land bank and next year it would push for amendments to taxation on land and buildings.
As for public education, the Thai premier said his government had planned alternative education services for the underprivileged including children living in remote areas, the children whose families regularly migrate, the young who have not finished high school, and children with disabilities. He added the government will also improve teachers’ welfare.
As for the reform of the justice system, Abhisit said the government would send its staffs to communities to provide local people with legal advice and receive complaints.
Abhisit noted his government would work out a clear plan to cover these areas of reform. The plan would be a New Year gift for Thai people. He said the measures would not be costly and should be able to solve structural problems and relieve inequality in the society. (TNA)
