PM promises for power decentralisation

BANGKOK, Dec 18(TNA) - Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva vowed today (Dec 18) that he will push for more decentralisation of power to local administration.
Abhisit said during his special speech on "decentralisation of power and promotion of local administration" at a seminar in Pattaya that the government's policy is to increase power decentralisation by at least 35 per cent in the coming years, noting that the decentralisation of power to local administrations has become clearer after the promulgation of the 1997 Constitution.
The Democrat premier revealed that his government will push for the Parliament's passage of various laws related to decentralisation next year or will at least submit draft bills on the issue before the House of Representatives; so they can be deliberated by the new parliament after this parliament's term is terminated.
Abhisit said his government will also push for a parliamentary passage of a law to develop Mae Sot District in the northwestern Tak Province to become a special local administration and exclusive economic zone, which is different from Bangkok or Pattaya.
The prime minister admitted that there have been problems hindering the government's power decentralisation plan, saying that the problems come from the country's political situation and revelant laws which have delayed progress in the decentralisation process.(TNA)
