ASEAN adopts Krabi Initiative 2010

BANGKOK,Dec 18(TNA) - Ministers of member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN, including Thailand, have adopted the Krabi Initiative 2010 as a framework for intra-regional cooperation on science and technology to facilitate the formation of the ASEAN Single Community by 2015.

The Krabi Initiative 2010 was endorsed at the 6th ASEAN Science and Technology Ministerial Meeting, hosted by Thailand in the southern resort Krabi Province this week--in which ASEAN science ministers and their counterparts from the 10-nation bloc's three dialogue partners, including China, Japan and India, took part.

Thai Deputy Permanent Secretary for Science and Technology Dr. Weerapong Paesuwan said that the Krabi Initiative 2010 contains recommendations on eight areas, including ASEAN innovations for the world market, a regional digital society, new media and social networking, green technology, food and energy security, water resource management, bio-diversity and life-time scientific learning.

Weerapong acknowledged that the Krabi Initiative has drawn up new approaches on driving scientific and technological development in the region with emphasis on nurturing culture, grass root people, youth’s innovation, technology for people’s livelihood, and that during the meeting, Bangkok also proposed Thailand Earth Observation Satellite or THEOS to be used for disaster management in the region.(TNA)
