Global warming shapes Thai farmers’ future

BANGKOK,Dec17(TNA)-Researchers say climate change or the global warming problem will continue to influence the future of Thailand’s agricultural sector.

Thailand Research Fund (TRF), therefore, organised a seminar in Bangkok on Friday (Dec17) aimed to seek ways to ease impacts of the problem and to prepare the Thai agricultural sector for better coping with the problem in the future.

Associated Professor Dr. Chancharat Ruangdecha, TRF’s Director for Agriculture, acknowledged that Thailand’s agricultural sector has been staggered by drought, floods, uncertainties in produce prices, high production costs and food safety-related problems over the past three years, and that these challenges are what researchers and academics in the Thai public sector have jointly worked against.

Dr. Chancharat suggested that the Thai experts should also seek ways to improve locally-produced farm products to meet market demand, promote more use of organic fertilizers, particularly for rice production, and boost the country's competitiveness to deal with competitors, namely Vietnam.

According to the director, TRF’s agricultural programs focus on promoting scientific and technological research to upgrade both capacity and competitiveness of Thai farmers.(TNA)
